How to make DIY Cuticle Oil with Essential Oils

diy-nail-cuticle-oil

This DIY cuticle oil with essential oils helps to strengthen and moisturize your nails and cuticles and is so easy to make!

Why do you need cuticle oil?

The cuticle oil moisturizes and softens the skin, and can also strengthen brittle and weak nails, whiten them and heal the cuticle faster after a pruning manicure. Regular use of such oil helps to prolong the beauty and longitude of manicure, keep the cuticles soft and moisturized, without burrs.

The DIY cuticle oil we are going to make contains various natural components that have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and moisturizing effects. Many oils have a positive effect on the nail growth.

The basic recipe for cuticle oil

As the base you can choose vegetable oils that you have at home – almond oil, pistachio oil, apricot oil, grape oil, olive oil. Avoid using castor and linseed oil, castor oil is too viscous and sticky, and linseed oil gets rancid very quickly.

The selected base oils should be taken as a base by adding “active” vegetable oils:

  • Jojoba oil (also called “liquid wax” because it creates a thin film that protects the skin from damage). Buy it here.
  • Rose Oil (intensely moisturizes the skin, contains many vitamins)
  • Wheat germ oil (contains vitamin E, restores skin elasticity, protects it from drying out, extends the shelf life of oil mixtures).
  • Cucumber oil (powerful moisturizing oil, restores even the driest skin, moisturizes the cuticle, firms weak and brittle nails).
  • Argan oil, baobab oil, rice oil, avocado oil can be also used for nail care.

Essential oils (add 4-6 drops of them per 10 ml of oil mixture):

  • Lemon essential oil (the most popular essential oil for nail and hand care. It is used in products for strengthening nails, as well as to soften the cuticles. The grapefruit essential oil also has similar properties).
  • Myrrh essential oil (heals cuts and wounds, stimulates the growth of nails, makes them stronger, also has anti-inflammatory and antifungal action, heals the matrix and dermis under the nails).
  • Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (restores brittle nails, strengthens the nail plate)
  • Cedarwood essential oil (stimulates nail growth, used in products for accelerated nail growth)
  • Tea tree essential oil (has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. It is used for healing small wounds and cuts, used in oils to restore the cuticle). Or any other antibacterial essential oil.

To increase the activity of the mixture, you can add:

  • Vitamin E (sold in liquid form or in gelatin soft capsules, you can buy it here), 1 capsule per 10-15 ml of oil mixture.
  • Propolis oil extract. It has a waterproof effect, which is especially useful for use in hand and nail products. Perfectly heals wounds and cuts at manicure, antimicrobial. Add 4-5 drops per 10 ml of oil mixture.

My favorite bottles for the DIY cuticle oil can be bought here:

The good thing about homemade cosmetics is that it can be infinitely varied and individual recipes can be made for each case. I will write my two recipes for cuticle oils, you can repeat them entirely, or you can make your own mixtures by choosing other vegetable and essential oils.

My all-time cuticle oil for shiny nails

  • 7 ml of jojoba oil
  • 3 ml of rose oil
  • 4 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 2 drops of ylang-ylang essential oil
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

This oil perfectly protects the cuticle from damage, moisturizes and softens it, as well as gives the nails a natural shine, and bleaches the yellowness of the nails, which appears when using dark or bright nail polish. Lemon essential oil also strengthens the nails, and has a mild antiseptic effect. It can also be replaced with grapefruit essential oil. You can further enhance the shine of your nails if you polish your nails with a piece of suede after applying the oil.

Healing oil for cuticles and nails

  • 5 ml of olive oil
  • 5 ml of sweet almond oil
  • 5 ml of grape seed oil
  • 3 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

And here is a very simple composition, which is aimed at rapid disinfection and healing of wounds and cuts of the cuticle after a manicure. Tea tree essential oil, a powerful herbal antiseptic, combined with the calming and antiseptic action of lavender is best suited for this.

How to make cuticle oil: the process

Now measure the vegetable oils and mix them in a glass cup, add the selected essential oils by drops. If you use additional components (e.g. vitamin E), then add them at this stage. Gelatin capsules are easy to pierce with a needle and squeeze their contents into the mixture. Mix everything and pour the oil into the selected bottle (ideally, if it will be with a brush).

Choose a small dropper bottle or a bottle with a brush. You can keep it on the nightstand and use it before you go to sleep. You can also buy 10 ml roll-on bottles, which are incredibly useful to keep the cuticle oil in your purse and to apply on to go.

Since sunlight deteriorates the healing properties of essential oils, either store homemade cuticle oil in a dark place or fill in the dark glass bottles (e.g. amber bottles).
